Director of Communications

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the annual communications plan across the network’s discreet audiences in collaboration with the NELA Board and volunteers
  • Lead the generation of online content that engages audience segments and leads to measurable action. Decide who, where, and when to disseminate
  • Put communications vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness as well as to test the effectiveness of communications activities
  • Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, and NELA’s websites, including Fetish Fair Fleamarkets
  • Mentor and lead a team member(s) responsible for NELA’s website administration and coordination, social media presence, and public relations.
  • Coordinate webpage maintenance—ensure that new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events) is posted regularly
  • Track and measure the level of engagement within the NELA communications network over time
  • Manage development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, email communications, and NELA’s website
  • Manage all media contacts, including news reporters, TV and radio personalities, local newspapers, magazines, etc.
  • Write, draft, edit and distribute press releases, official statements and announcements suitable for publication in newspapers, magazines and online media as well as for NELA Associates
  • Coordinate with Director of Associates the distribution/communication of official statements, announcements and other communication to Associates
  • When appropriate, arrange for press coverage of NELA events and issues
  • Respond in a timely fashion to media requests for information regarding NELA and other associated topics that relate to NELA’s mission such as BDSM, leather and fetish/kink
  • Speak openly to the press including TV, radio, reporters, etc. in an educational and professional manner regarding NELA, its mission and associated topics such as BDSM, leather and fetish/kink
  • Monitor local and national media coverage of BDSM, leather and fetish/kink-related news stories
  • Respond to local and national media coverage of BDSM, leather and fetish/kink-related news stories via letters to the editor (and/or volunteering additional information when appropriate) on behalf of NELA
  • Coordinate with Board on the publication of NELA educational materials and promotional items as needed for NELA events
  • Attend board meetings and participate in NELA’s regular operations

Qualifications

  • Current NELA Associate (or willingness to join/renew Associateship)
  • Ability to work both on a team and as an individual contributor
  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to be diplomatic and maintain composure when speaking to/dealing with media and public

Minimum Time Commitment

  • Approximately 10-20 hours per month for Associate-related duties although this will likely increase around the Fetish Fair Fleamarket events
  • Approximately 3-4 hours per month for Board meetings
  • Other events as required or desired such as PRIDE events throughout New England, Executive Working Sessions (1-2-day events on occasion), attendance at Fetish Fair Fleamarket events, Volunteer Appreciation Party, and annual Associates’ meeting

Length of Term – 3 Years

Term:  April 1* – March 31

*Or upon induction to office
